Subject: Rescue of Jews in Albania - Holocaust Remembrance Day
Dear Friend,
On Monday, April 8, 2013 I spoke before the Young Israel of Long Beach, NY Synagogue on Holocaust Remembrance Day—the 70th Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. I took the occasion to not only remember the millions of Jews who were victims of the Holocaust, but to tell the unique story of Jewish survival in Albania and Kosova. It is of historical significance to remember that Albania was the only country in Europe in which there were more Jews after World War II than before the War began. Because the Albanian tradition of "Besa"—a code of honor handed down from ancient Albanian tradition and culture—requires one even to risk his or her own life to protect a guest from injury or death, the Albanian people were motivated to save every Jew that resided or sought asylum in their land. Please watch the speech here ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwkmlV5UwXA ). Many thanks, Joseph J. DioGuardi President, Albanian American Civic League P.S.
